Hot on the Highstreet Week 194: Parisian shopping

Coincidence: A small and selective boutique fashion store hidden away on Rue Chapon. At the forefront of the chic Concept movement in Paris this shop offers cutting edge cool fashion, furniture and beauty products.

Nose: An emporium of different sized coloured bottles like you have never seen before, Nose will find evaluate and discover the perfect perfume for you. Sit at the stylish counter and let the experts recommend a scent which suits your character, age and personality. We spent hours here trying and testing rare and exclusive creations.

L’Eclaireur: This is THE original concept store, launched in 1980 by Armand Hadida. This innovative shop now has seven stores in Paris, though Rue de Sevigne is arguably the most impressive with a two-tonne sculpture made from wooden planks amongst the clothes. Stocking high end designers alongside lesser known newcomers L’Eclaireur stills sets the trends.

Etat Libre D’Orange: After visiting this punk Parisian perfume brand on Redchurch Street, I was determined to find the flagship store in Paris. This perfumery is brave and bold proudly producing scents which are both unique and addictive. I loved the Soho-esque look of the shop and adored the quirky scents which use intense flavours like gunpowder and popcorn to make their perfumes completely one of a kind.

APC: This French institution has spread worldwide, and I have often admired the collections in London shops. There are numerous branches in Paris, pick up a blue striped top that will never go out of fashion.

If you are lucky enough to be spending Valentines weekend in Paris be sure to pick up a present for your love in one of these cool concept stores.

River Cafe, Hammersmith

As December approached last year, I found I was being repeatedly asked: ‘where is the best place for a work Christmas meal and party’? The specifications were always challenging: big enough, cosy enough, special enough, posh enough, cheap enough, private dining facilities, entire exclusivity, location… there is so much to consider, and it is a daunting responsibility to choose the venue, date and menus to satisfy the whole company.

London venues fill up fast and the prices escalate as workers all over town become more desperate for the perfect venue. This year I had my work celebrations at a very special restaurant, The River Café in Hammersmith. On a misty Wednesday lunchtime the setting was bleak and beautiful by the river. The open plan restaurant looks industrial from the exterior, slightly like a swimming baths. But inside the dining room is light and fresh with white draped tables and a psychedelic neon pink oven at the rear of the restaurant.

We were seated at the back in the lovely private dining room which seats up to 18 guests. The dining room has its own entrance with views onto the terrace and into the open kitchen. Cheese lovers will enjoy looking at the glass fronted cheese room which exhibits a selection of unusual Italian cheeses. The waiters were kind and patient with our rowdy group! We started with flutes of Prosecco, battered artichokes and pumpkin bruschetta. For starters a selection of antipasti were delivered to the table – highlights were the plump and creamy buffalo mozzarella and delicately smoky prosciutto ham.

Known for its exquisite homemade pasta, I persuaded our waiter to allow me to have a River Café pasta dish, despite its absence on the set menu. The buttery Agnoli packages of pasta filled with a rich and aromatic mix of rabbit, pheasant, pancetta, bay and Il Balzo Chianti Rufina was divine, I could have eaten double the amount. Other successes round the table were the thick-cut roast veal chop with capers, sage, lemon peel, Prosciutto di Parma and Risina beans and the chargrilled, marinated leg of lamb with smashed pumpkin & potato and hot olive & anchovy sauce. It was a feast of Italian delights.

Dessert for me was a disappointment, I found the pannacotta with pomegranate sloppy and unappetisingly presented. I looked adoringly at the plate of cheese that my neighbour was devouring. Wine was carefully and expertly chosen throughout the meal, complementing the food and flavours.

The River Café is one of the longest running, most successful fine dining restaurants in London, and I was impressed with every aspect of our experience here.

The Roger, New York

The brand new Roger Hotel is a delight. Entering this recently renovated property on Madison Avenue, I felt like I was delving inside a giant gift-wrapped present. Everything here feels shiny and special. The entrance is grand but homely, an adjoining living room is decorated with lavish deep blue sofas and carpet, with nostalgic black and white photos on the walls. A small cocktail bar serves guests with their favourite tipple.

Ideally located in midtown Manhattan, the Roger’s luxurious tailoring will appeal to business guests whilst the leisure travellers will love the personalised touches and innovative design. The fresh and pretty décor is the work of designer Anna Busta. Entering the hotel you would never believe that 194 guest rooms are concealed behind the lift door – the interior feels and looks like an intimate boutique hotel.

Our Deluxe room was located on the 9th floor, with awe-inspiring views of the streets below. Surprisingly spacious and sophisticated, the room had understated charm which I believe would cater to any guest’s tastes. It is a real luxury to have enough space in the room to unpack. Above the bed was an atmospheric picture adding a retro touch to the otherwise modern and minimalist theme. Furniture was simple and functional and amenities plentiful – the mini-bar assortment was impressive! I found lighting too dim for my needs, I struggled to write as soon as the sun set, and even struggled with make-up application in the morning. The staff kindly assisted us with an extra lamp but the room was still shrouded in shadows.

The bathroom was bland but clean and in perfect working order. Thick, divinely soft bathrobes were a particularly lovely addition and I was interested to discover their brand of toiletries, CO Bigalow bath and hair products. A delectable gourmet buffet breakfast is served in the friendly Parlour where you are encouraged to share the big wooden tables with fellow guests. Hot and cold options are available, I chose a cappuccino and croissant each morning to wake the senses before a long day exploring the city.

For bloggers and those wishing to work at high-speed, efficient free Wifi service at the Roger was a great addition to the package.

Moments away from the iconic tourist sights (Empire State Building and Grand Central Terminal), this hotel ticks most boxes. The welcoming staff ensure you find a new home away from home at the Roger.
