Naughty Piglets, Brixton

Naughty Piglets is the kind of neighbourhood eatery you move flat to be nearer. The restaurant was set up by husband and wife team, Joe and Margaux Sharratt, in March 2016 who aim to provide visitors with a considered natural wine list and a frequently changing seasonal menu, based around charcoal grilled recipes. Needless to say the 34-cover venue is always packed, with locals, and those travelling from other areas of London to try out this winning combination.

Inside the restaurant is modest but stylish, with eight bar seats which boast a kitchen view, for those who want to be closer to the action! We sat here and enjoyed observing the restaurant as a busy Friday evening unfolded. I let Margaux choose our wine, with sommelier experience from some of London’s most successful culinary spots I figured she would pick better than me. We tried a glass of two whites, a 2013 ‘La Rue aux Loups’ Chenin Blanc and the very unique 2014 Cheverny Tradition, from Domaine de Montcy. Both wonderfully refreshing and satisfying at the same time.

The menu is short and sweet with options to suit every palate. Locals who visit often can relish different dishes each week as the recipes change with the produce available and the seasonality of ingredients. Roast Pumpkin with Goat’s Cheese and Parma Ham was a rustic dish of subtly complementing Autumn flavours, smokey chunks of fleshy pumpkin with salty ham and cheese. I can’t miss out on burrata if I see it on a menu, it is difficult to go wrong with a dollop of the creamiest soft cheese, but the version Joe has created is particularly lavish, served on a bed of perfectly seasoned caponata.

From the meat and fish options we chose Scallops with Cauliflower and XO sauce, Beef Rump with bon marrow toast, shallots & watercress and BBQ pork belly with sesame and Korean spices, a favourite which has been on the menu since opening in March. Scallops were delicate and succulent paired with silky cauliflower puree and a hint of citrusy yuzu which cut through the richness of the dish. I loved the simple, slick presentation of the pork, but found the whole dish too salty, even with assortment of green vegetables. Silence fell over the table as we devoured the beef, an utterly delicious plate of wholesome British flavours, compiled in an elegantly French way.

There were two decadent puddings to choose from, naturally we ordered one of each. Chocolate mousse with salted caramel and hazelnuts was like a grown-up Mars bar deconstructed on the plate, with oozing dangerously sweet caramel sauce and the smoothest mousse you could imagine. Baked vanilla cheesecake with figs was blissfully soft, topped with contrasting crunchy puffed rice and served with ruby red fig segments.

I’m lucky enough to only be a short bus ride away from Naughty Piglets, and I can’t wait to spend more Friday evenings here, unwinding with a good glass of wine and a lot of completely delicious food.

Albertine winebar, Shepherd’s Bush

After a tiring day trawling the shops of Westfield I always crave a chilled glass of white wine. Despite living in the Shepherd’s Bush area for years I have only recently discovered the delightful Albertine wine bar.

Slightly removed from the main grubby Shepherd’s Bush strip, Albertine has a charming old-fashioned feel with tired but characterful wooden furniture, a blackboard with special suggestions, dimmed lighting and clouded windows. The vibe is very different to anywhere else in this loud and busy area of London. I felt like I was hanging out in a little tavern frequented by the Hogwarts students and magicians.

Albertine is definitely not a newbie, and has been satisfying West London customers for decades. A huge range of bottles are picked for their individual and unique qualities. The global list features over 130 wines with something to suit every requirement and taste. The prices are reasonable too, for less than £30 you can enjoy a fine bottle with a delectable cheese board and bread to accompany.

Wine bars are making an apparent revival in London at the moment, and Albertine is a great place to enjoy this growing trend.

An Evening East: Burgers and Booze

Once a place of dangerous streets and damaged shop fronts, Hackney is now full of hot haunts. Conveniently, multiple bus routes run through the borough and overground and underground stations are dotted around. Last Friday evening I jumped off the tube at Bethnal Green ready to explore this exciting neighbourhood.

Satan’s Whiskers: Dark and sultry this little vintage bar is not hidden or secret but still manages to create a sense of allure and intrigue inside. With humorous taxidermy decorating the den and flickering candles on the tables, the prohibition vibe is very present. Started up by three master mixologists, SW doesn’t aim to produce the most adventurous or unique cocktails, instead preferring to mix practically perfect versions of classics and favourites. Clover Club was a pastel pink with a thick foamy top, wonderfully balanced with a zesty kick.

The Advisory: Named in TimeOut as one of London’s top burger outlets, I had high hopes for this venue. Interestingly named after the Asian Women’s Advisory Centre that was previously on the site, this restaurant prides itself on offering inexpensive burgers and beer of high quality. Witty remarks cover the walls, we sat below the direct order “Ketchup must be applied to the fries”. Our order took a while to arrive, but the results were pleasing… sweet soft brioche buns holding a cheese coated patty, crisp lettuce, tomato and crispy bacon. The meat was a little overcooked for my liking but the flavour was still good. Perhaps they could be a bit more experimental with their recipes and flavours.

Sager & Wilde: This is my new favourite wine bar, and the kind of place you wish was your local. I can imagine whiling away Friday evenings here, sipping exceptional (and reasonably priced) wine and enjoying the atmosphere of the dimly lit bar. Alongside the innovative wine list, there is a list of tempting cheesy treats and meaty snacks. It is a winning combination.

Here’s to Hackney, home of many weird and wonderful venues. I hope to return to try some more soon.
