Hot on the Highstreet Week 256

On first appearance the streets of Athens seemed to offer little more than tourist tat, but after asking fashionable locals and our enthusiastic concierge I discovered a few really inspiring shops.

Joanna Kourbela – this popular Greek designer has two shops next door to each other on Charimichali Street selling ready-to-wear and couture clothing. Kourbela’s main inspiration are elements of nature and her collections are minimalist and classically simple. Block colours and flowing, natural, organic fabrics flatter the figure and are very comfortable to wear – perfect for the hot Greek weather.

Brettos – Greece is well known for its wine and ouzo, however Brettos bar has made a name for itself offering the finest homemade flavoured Greek liqueurs. Despite being in one of the most touristy areas of the city, this colourful emporium is often overlooked by tourists. For €4.50 you can try a glass of one of the vibrant flavours on ice or for a little more buy a bottle to take home and use in exotic cocktails recipes. We tried coconut and Parfums d’amour, a mix of rose, orange and vanilla.

Melissinos Art, “The Poet Sandal Maker” – Since 1920 this family of expert sandal makers have been providing stylish made-to-fit leather sandals for celebrities and those in the know. Squeeze into the tiny cluttered shop, choose from the menu of styles and let Pantelis fit them to your feet. Ranging from €33-€39, it is a small price to pay for the same shoes as John Lennon, Sarah Jessica Parker and the Princesses of Greece.

Lito Cabinet de Curiosités – Lito Karakostanoglou is a self-taught jeweller who has previously designed catwalk pieces for many renowned designers. She opened this lovely little boutique in 2006 showcasing her sensational designs in attractive glass cabinets. I loved the insect-inspired collection which uses real iridescent beetles encased in gold, like the pair of earrings above which are priced at €4,600. There is also a lovely range of hand painted ‘evil eye’ necklaces, dainty, unique and a bit more affordable.

Vassilis Emmanuel Zoulias – walking into this candy coloured shop I felt like I was in wonderland. Zoulias really knows how to make a woman feel like a princess with his sophisticated yet fun dresses and high-heel shoes. The elegant creations have a vintage feel thanks to the timeless tailoring and standout patterns. The colours are rich and the materials luxurious; I’ve definitely never seen neon colours used in such a grown-up way.

Sandals Grande, St Lucia

The Sandals empire is growing thick and fast across the Caribbean, with the newest opening in Grenada just announced. There are three Sandals on the island of St Lucia, each with their own specialities and qualities. We spent the final two nights of our epic Caribbean trip at Sandals Grande St Lucian in the north of the island. Totally relaxing and luxurious, it was the perfect hideaway for our precious last days of sunshine.

Every Sandals destination sits directly on a stunning beach, with impressive stretches of white sand and expanses of clear turquoise water. Grande St Lucian is no exception and in fact is often described as the “closest location to a picture postcard”. As many will already know, Sandals is adults only (there are many alternative family focused resorts) and they offer all-inclusive holidays, so you need not worry about a thing.

The resorts all provide a transfer service to and from the airport so that your holiday can start the moment you step off the plane. We were very excited to be met by a chauffeur driven car with chilled champagne and chocolate ready for us to munch on during the journey to Le Grande.

Moments away from Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island, there is plenty around to entertain visitors, though I can understand why some are reluctant to leave the resort. After a thirty minute drive we arrived at our destination. The three storey lobby provides a very grand entrance, a highly polished and decorated palace, not necessarily to my taste but impressive nonetheless. We were greeted by smiling staff with cold flannels, introduced to our butlers (yes there were two) who escorted us to our living quarters.

We were staying in an Ultra Grande Luxe Rondoval Suite with our own Private Plunge Pool & Whirlpool. After a long tiring journey it was blissful to arrive in this fully equipped mini apartment. Decorated with warm neutral tones and soft comforting furnishings, it is an ultra relaxing suite that we felt instantly at home in. The bed was luxuriously big, soft and bouncy… the kind you immediately sink into. Every additional amenity is available, with fully stocked fridges and unlimited champagne and spirits for thirsty guests. The ‘his and her’ bathroom facilities are lovely and spacious with a gloriously big jacuzzi bath, indoor and outdoor showers. My only complaint concerned the internet, which is not free and is difficult to access from the rooms.

Everything aquatic is available during your Sandals stay, with an alluring dive reef just five minutes away. There are five fresh water pools on offer including the Sandals signature energy pool with swim-up bar and the romantic beachside heart-shaped pool for lovers (a bit schmaltzy). For more adventurous guests a variety of watersports and boating activities are available, many are free of charge and should definitely be taken advantage of.

The dining options are numerous, with eight international restaurants at Le Grande and a further twelve eateries on offer at the other two St Lucia Sandals branches. We were lucky to try some of the best, including the renowned over-the-water Gordon’s and the fine French restaurant La Toc in the other Sandals branch. Whilst eating in the warm evening air, you can enjoy the nightly entertainment which includes live music and performing acts. For lighter meals during the day, beachside grills and pizzerias are available for peckish sunbathers. I found I enjoyed the simpler food at Sandals, where the qualities of the delicious Caribbean produce can really be noticed and appreciated.

Before leaving the resort we were lucky enough to try the spa (see review here). I can recommend this as a truly lovely addition to your holiday with very experienced therapists and individually tailored treatments, it is a refuge of ultimate indulgence.

Anything you could wish for is possible at Sandals where they strive to make every couple’s dreams come true. For many, a ‘once in a lifetime’ holiday becomes a yearly anniversary… the Sandals way of life is certainly addictive, I was very sad to leave.

Sandals Red Lane Spa, St Lucia

Everything at Sandals comes in twos: deck chairs on the beach, champagne glasses at the bar and massage beds at the spa.

On our final morning in the Caribbean, we visited the Sandals Grande Spa, Red Lane for a very special joint massage. Catering entirely for couples and particularly honeymooners, this treatment is extremely romantic and thoughtful. We were a little cynical at first but it is impossible not to enjoy the experience, it is so relaxing with highly trained therapists releasing all the aches and pains.

Red Lane uses a variety of brands including the brilliant Dermologica skincare range which I love. After changing into the warm robes, we were given three oils to smell and asked to choose the aroma we were most attracted to. I chose the vibrant and rich tension oil.

Once we were face down on the beds, the Sandals therapists worked their magic massaging our whole bodies paying particular attention to troublesome areas. It was one of the best massages I’ve ever had, soothing and completely relaxing. At the end of the massage our hands were linked together, I found this hilarious, but I can imagine it is a sweet touch for newlyweds. The room was attractively decorated with petals and heart shaped towels, very cosy and comforting and the perfect room to encourage relaxation.

After the treatment guests are encouraged to use the other amenities and equipment. We visited the steam rooms, but found they weren’t quite hot enough. Showered and dressed, I felt refreshed and energised, ready for the day ahead. There is so much to do at Sandals Grande but I would highly recommend Red Lane Spa, the most relaxing place on site, it will truly get you in the holiday mood.

If you are feeling extra lazy, treatments can be arranged in the comfort of your own room.
