Windsor Burger, Gourmet Burger Kitchen

London has gone royally berserk for the Jubilee, and much to my delight, celebrations, collaborations and commemorative gestures seem to be continuing throughout June. What better way to be part of the party than visiting a branch of Gourmet Burger Kitchen and indulging in the exemplary special edition Windsor Burger, a luxurious recipe to honour the monarchy.

I went to try the Windsor at the Soho branch with a friend who is an unrivalled authority on all things royal. As we munched through our meat, he mentioned the Queen’s dietary preferences, her love of ‘eating late and quickly’, Balmoral BBQs with Philip and her humorous opinions on culinary matters.

The burger, created by Head of Food, Tim Molema is limited edition, very exclusive and unlike anything else on the menu. An 8oz piece of bespoke beef from the world famous Sussex cattle reared on the grounds of Windsor Castle, it hopes to succeed as the ‘ultimate’ burger. This exciting collaboration with the Royal Farms of Windsor produces a burger of the highest quality and exceptional taste. The Sussex cattle are reared in the Castle groundsand the meat is hung to ensure outstanding tenderness and flavour.

The burger was absolutely divine, exceeding all my expectations, especially considering the reasonable price. Utterly indulgent but stylishly simple, this burger fulfils all the necessary criteria. The meat is cooked to perfection, a juicy pattie which has a rich flavour without feeling heavy. Alongside the meat, the Windsor is served with mustard-mayo (creamy, peppery and wonderful), lettuce, tomato and red onion. Optional smoky chipotle ketchup is available on the side. The best bit in my opinion was the soft and sweet, lightly toasted brioche bun which encases the Windsor burger… it complemented the beef and added an upmarket luxurious feel to the meal.

To accompany your burger there are numerous delicious sides and extras – onion rings met the whole tables approval: crunchy onion, light batter, perfectly cooked and seasoned, and most importantly not too greasy. Needless to say they didn’t last long on the table. I was also hugely impressed with the super skinny rosemary fries, shoelace thin these crunchy salty snippets of potato were tossed with flavoursome rosemary and salt, extremely moreish and tempting, we ended up ordering a second portion in greedy haste.

The Windsor burger is available until the end of June at a GBK near you. I think the Queen would definitely approve of the Windsor, I vote for making it a permanent fixture on the GBK menu.

Hot on the Highstreet Week 106

As we are in the midst of the Diamond Jubilee, I feel it is essential to reveal my favourite queen-themed item available on the highstreet. There is plenty on offer – every shop, café, restaurant and bar seems decorated to the extreme, flag-frenzied and British-bonkers.

I’m a sucker for patriotic gifts, and have a whole collection of Union Jack inspired clothing, so I can’t help but adore all the Jubilee items on sale. If you are a mad keen Marmite fan like me the special edition spread will appeal to you. Marmite has earned a reputation worldwide as an iconic British brand since its conception in 1902. The special edition jar honours the royal event without detracting from the popular brand. The fabulous playful new name ‘Ma’amite’ is a genius touch. The packaging is created by design agency Hornall Anderson, adorned with the Union Jack it will certainly standout on the supermarket shelves.

What better way to toast the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee than with this patriotic and witty special edition version of the famous British spread on your toast! Whether you love or hate it, I’m sure the Nation will unite to salute this Monarchy inspired Marmite.

Sold online, on Ebay, in all major supermarkets or from the Marmite shop here and priced around £2.72.
