La Bodega Negra, cafe and ceviche bar, Soho

Trekking through Soho ravenous after 11pm is a disappointing affair. After a late night play, food was a necessity and I had confidence that Soho would be the place to find our grub. Turns out everywhere stops serving at 10.30 ish, everywhere that is apart from La Bodega Negra Café and Ceviche Bar.

This Mexican café glows on the corner of Old Compton Street enticing in guests with the eye-catching neon sign and a happy soundtrack which drifts down the street. We skipped in, so delighted to hear they were still serving that we almost hugged the waiter. Snuggling up at a cosy corner table we were in the ideal position to observe and enjoy our surroundings, the raucous groups of friends and intimate couples, all enjoying a casual meal while listening to the entertaining music.

I promise you I tried to avoid the cocktails, especially after several glasses of Pimms earlier in the evening, but the authentic sounding drinks were irresistible… it didn’t help that I had major cocktail envy watching all the other diners sipping pretty drinks from martini glasses. I wanted to be like them, and taste what they had.. so I succumbed and ordered a caiprinha which arrived ice cold, strong and zingy but utterly delicious.

The menu is filled with all the usual classics, in numerous meat and veggie varieties. We ordered a few plates to share: Chicken Tostada, Pork Al Pastor Tacos with Salsa Verde and Quesadillas with Chorizo, Cheese and Salsa Roja. The dishes are slightly odd sizes, too small to share but too big to pop in your mouth in one go… neither starter nor main. It is best to order a selection and pick at it all, sharing and caring as you go. Apparently the Tacos are the most popular, yummy fillings in hard crunchy shells… but I found that I preferred the other dishes. Quesadillas were piping hot and oozing melted cheese, an addictive combination of ingredients with a kick from the spicy salsa and with a dollop of contrasting soured cream. Chicken Tostada was good too, an appetising mix of marinated pulled chicken, tinga, crema and avocado and the slightly strange addition of pineapple which I didn’t like so much. The homemade Guacamole is a must, mixed to perfection, I would definitely recommend a side portion with your meal.

Had it been earlier in the evening, I would have indulged in one of the yummy sounding desserts… especially as Mango Pannacotta and Lime Granita was on offer! There’s something to look forward to for next time…

La Bodega Negra provides tasty food in a fun environment and is the perfect place for a mischievous midnight snack.

Pure, Shaftesbury Avenue

Pure is a very simple concept… providing busy Londoners with fresh and healthy, handmade and tasty food for breakfast and lunch. With a range of hot food for chillier days and snacks, salads and wraps for the warmer months, Pure offers the perfect menu to suit your appetite, any time of year.

On August 1st Pure opened its third store at 151 Shaftesbury Avenue, to join the Soho and Fitzrovia outlets.

I was given a bag of goodies last week to try and taste. Sharing the love, I treated my work pals to the feast and got their opinions on the various dishes.

The salads are small but packed full of flavour. We tried the crunchy fresh Caesar salad which we were pleased to discover included plenty of parmesan and grilled chicken, lovely dressing, boiled egg and croutons. The ‘Marrakesh’ salad is vibrant and summery with sun-dried tomatoes, roast chicken and golden raisins served on a pea and mint wholewheat couscous.

The sweet treats were my favourite: Pure serve decadent mini pots of yumminess like ‘Sicilian Lemon Cheesecake’ and ‘Summer Fruit Crumble’, or for sugar lovers on the go, Brownie bites or chewy banana pieces are ideal to munch on.

I am always in Theatreland for West End shows and am often in need of a quick, light meal before the performance begins… and now my dilemma seems to be solved, thanks to Pure’s selection of feel-good and taste-good food.

THOROUGHLY MODERN MISS: Amethyste, Phoenicia, Beirut

Legend has it that the tears of the Greek God Dionysus, the god of drunkenness, stained the white quartz statue of a beautiful girl purple creating the amethyste stone. The décor of the stunning Amethyste lounge and restaurant is not too far removed from the Greek gods and goddesses. The restaurant has majestic fountains and huge pillars surrounding the Phoenicia’s outdoor swimming pool, where swinging beds are draped in majestic purple throws. The setting of the restaurant is serene and overlooks the sea so it is the perfect setting for a midday retreat from the sun or a drink in the evening where you can take in the city of Beirut.

The menu at amethyst caters for all palates but the speciality has to be the mixed grill which we had to share. The meat arrived sizzling on a mini barbeque of hot coals. The lamb kafteh and lightly grilled chicken were cooked to perfection. A speciality in Lebanon is the mixed grill which is traditionally shared between two or more people.

It is the sharing of food that provides a unique dining experience in Beirut. We had a selection of side dishes including the humus (a staple of almost every meal) which was smooth and tangy blended to perfection with a drizzle of olive oil. The tabouleh was very fresh and complemented the grill perfectly. I liked the originality of the menu and the fries scattered with chilli flakes provided the perfect amount of heat to keep you wanting more.

After the nightlife in Beirut had taken a toll on us, the virgin cocktails were a welcome refresher. The original flavour of the lemon and ginger mixed with honey were reminiscent of the geek theme of the lounge. The decadence of the bar and pool area is not overwhelming and is the ideal place for a few cocktails before hitting Beirut’s intoxicating nightlife. The outdoor pool area plays black and white films in the evenings, a touch that only added to the laid back glamour of the lounge. Amethyste has breathtaking views of the nearby marina which are only amplified at night – with a cocktail it has to be the only place to spend a fabulous summer evening in Beirut.
