Lucky Chip Burgers, Sebright Arms, Hackney

The Lucky Chip burgers are worth travelling across London for, located in impossible-to-find pubs or worse still random burger vans with peculiar opening times. I had been intending to visit and try the Lucky Chip product for much too long. I tried to shake the desire out of my system, I mean it is ‘only a burger’ and yet, as with most London fads, once the hype was within my bloodstream I was obsessed, almost possessed, with ticking this burger experience off my to do list.

The Sebright Arms in Hackney is not a particularly charming pub, shabby (not in a stylish way), poorly lit with a slightly unpleasant smell – in short it is your average London pub. However what makes it not so standard is the new menu in residence from Lucky Chip. The tasty American style cuisine has suddenly made this unassuming pub very popular, with west Londoners like me travelling for over an hour just to taste the succulent meat that many suggest is the best burger in London.

We arrived eagerly early evening, neither of us ravenous and yet extremely excited about the dining experience we were about to experience. I will admit… it was our second trip to Sebright – the first time (when we were gasping, starving for food) resulted in an unsatisfactory realisation that they stop serving early on Sunday afternoons, we had been informed incorrectly online. After another brisk walk through Hackney (now becoming increasingly familiar) we were ready for our burgers: the classic Cheeseburger for my friend and the interesting Danny Trejo speciality for me. Along with a pint of lemonade, some fries, plain and onion varieties and a little pot of mayo (preposterously priced at £1 extra!)

There was little talking and a lot of scoffing. The burgers didn’t disappoint – among the best, perhaps THE best I’ve tried… though I’m still deliberating on that one. I didn’t have the chance to try the cheeseburger, my friend was quite possessive. The Danny Trejo was a stunner, a tribute dish for the famous Mexican actor, it was a special combination… bacon chilli cheeseburger with chipotle mayo, tequila salsa, jalapenos and sour cream. Usually I am a simple burger kinda gal but I couldn’t resist this tempting combination of flavours. The meat is akin to Meat Liquor’s offerings, juicy and sloppy beef, blissfully easy to bite into with a moreish taste and lovely aged flavour. The bacon was thick and caramelly, grilled well and melting cheese oozed down the side.  All this is mounted onto a light toasted soft bun with generous selection of crunchy iceberg lettuce, sliced tomato and crunchy pickles, with a smear of French’s mustard mayonnaise. I describe it in such detail because I feel it deserves such an explanation.

The menu has a selection of burgers and hot dogs though I believe we chose the most appealing. The newest addition is the Bill Murray Life Aquatic Surf and Turf Burger, combining beef with soft shell crab within one bun… though I can’t understand why anyone would order this over an original divine beef patty.

Coming down from my burger high I’m afraid there is bad news. The fries were a major disappointment, arriving sloppy, wilted and poorly flavoured – we tried the classic and onion fries (misinterpreting the onion fries – thinking they were onion rings)… they were a little like soggy Monster Munch. I’d rather have thin crispy fries any day.

Our burger experience at Lucky Chip was over in a flash, the service though a little clueless was super speedy, as was our eating, it being too good to savour. There is no doubt about it, Lucky Chip burgers are a must try, whether they are the best in London… I’ll let you decide?

Hawksmoor Spitalfields Bar

Continuing in my quest to find Britain’s best burger I went to visit Hawksmoor’s newest bar in Spitalfields. Located downstairs just below the main restaurant, this new venue serves creative cocktails and a short menu of popular, classic dishes to eat.

It is a cute venue, speakeasy-esque with glittering mirrors on the walls. In theory it is a bar that serves a bit of accompanying food, however after the experience I would say the food is substantial and delicious enough to classify the place as an eatery. The mood is cheerful, groups of friends hang out on bar stools or gather round the small tables chomping sweet smelling burgers and glugging tropical drinks.

The menu is blissfully short and uncomplicated with an appealing list of treats: mains, sides, puddings, cocktails and desert island drinks. It doesn’t take long to choose and once we had ordered with our lovely and very helpful waitress we could sit, soak up the atmosphere and gossip. Our first round of cocktails arrived within minutes: Nuclear Banana Daiquiri (£11) for me and a Marmalade cocktail (£8.50) for my friend. The Marmalade inspired concoction with gin, lemon, Campari & marmalade was divine, thirst quenching, sweet but with a kick from the Campari. The explosive banana cocktail was a little bizarre, expertly mixed and super-thick. It was too heavy for a pre-meal apperitif but would be heavenly as a dessert cocktail or beach drink. I highly recommend the refreshing and fruity Mary Pickford drink, the pretty Green & Red Margarita and the exotic Trinidad Swizzle.

My diligent friend had done her research and recommended ordering the Tamworth Lamb: it was an unexpectedly awesome plate of grub, minced meat, herbs, lettuce and plenty of chilli, a seriously scrumptious snack. Obviously we had to try the burgers too, the perfectly simple Cheeseburger and the more jazzy Kimchi burger. Both were great with highest quality meat, flavoursome, extra juicy and grilled impeccably. My cheeseburger tasted sweet and succulent, I finished the lot without coming up for breath… the burgers are relatively small and cost a reasonable £8.50, ideal as a light dinner with drinks. The triple cooked chips (£4) are devilishly divine as always. Nowadays I am a real chip snob… anything less than triple fried really disappoints me.

Whilst continuing, less sober now, through the innovative cocktails on the list, we indulged in quirky desserts choosing  first the epic Sticky Toffee Sundae (£6.50) which was as calorific and naughty as you could imagine. But the really successful sweet course was the Peanut Butter Shortbread with Salted Caramel Ice Cream. This cake looked simple enough, however inside the nutty casing was a joyfully chocolatey centre – delicious with the cold salty caramel ice.

If you can’t manage a full slap up meal at Hawksmoor,  the new bar at Spitalfields is the ideal place to graze or gobble delicious food accompanied by even better cocktails.

Windsor Burger, Gourmet Burger Kitchen

London has gone royally berserk for the Jubilee, and much to my delight, celebrations, collaborations and commemorative gestures seem to be continuing throughout June. What better way to be part of the party than visiting a branch of Gourmet Burger Kitchen and indulging in the exemplary special edition Windsor Burger, a luxurious recipe to honour the monarchy.

I went to try the Windsor at the Soho branch with a friend who is an unrivalled authority on all things royal. As we munched through our meat, he mentioned the Queen’s dietary preferences, her love of ‘eating late and quickly’, Balmoral BBQs with Philip and her humorous opinions on culinary matters.

The burger, created by Head of Food, Tim Molema is limited edition, very exclusive and unlike anything else on the menu. An 8oz piece of bespoke beef from the world famous Sussex cattle reared on the grounds of Windsor Castle, it hopes to succeed as the ‘ultimate’ burger. This exciting collaboration with the Royal Farms of Windsor produces a burger of the highest quality and exceptional taste. The Sussex cattle are reared in the Castle groundsand the meat is hung to ensure outstanding tenderness and flavour.

The burger was absolutely divine, exceeding all my expectations, especially considering the reasonable price. Utterly indulgent but stylishly simple, this burger fulfils all the necessary criteria. The meat is cooked to perfection, a juicy pattie which has a rich flavour without feeling heavy. Alongside the meat, the Windsor is served with mustard-mayo (creamy, peppery and wonderful), lettuce, tomato and red onion. Optional smoky chipotle ketchup is available on the side. The best bit in my opinion was the soft and sweet, lightly toasted brioche bun which encases the Windsor burger… it complemented the beef and added an upmarket luxurious feel to the meal.

To accompany your burger there are numerous delicious sides and extras – onion rings met the whole tables approval: crunchy onion, light batter, perfectly cooked and seasoned, and most importantly not too greasy. Needless to say they didn’t last long on the table. I was also hugely impressed with the super skinny rosemary fries, shoelace thin these crunchy salty snippets of potato were tossed with flavoursome rosemary and salt, extremely moreish and tempting, we ended up ordering a second portion in greedy haste.

The Windsor burger is available until the end of June at a GBK near you. I think the Queen would definitely approve of the Windsor, I vote for making it a permanent fixture on the GBK menu.
