DS Automobiles Lunch at Club Gascon

Last week DS Automobiles invited me to a morning with their brand ambassador Pascal Aussignac. A select group of foodies were treated to an early morning tour of Smithfields meat market before joining him in the kitchen for a cooking masterclass.

DS Automobiles is the youngest automotive brand with a premium positioning of avant-garde spirit. The French car company has undergone great innovation since the original revolutionary DS cars were launched in Paris in the 60s. Proud of its French heritage and luxurious look, it seemed fitting for the brand to pair up with Chef Pascal Aussignac, the gastronomic talent behind London Michelin-starred restaurant Club Gascon.

After zooming across town in the slick new DS car to collect the special secret ingredient (Italian white tulips) we were back at the Club Gascon kitchen and ready to cook for our lunch. We stood in the small kitchen and learnt lots of interesting tips and techniques for French fine cooking.

At 1pm we sat down for a deliciously avant-garde 3-course meal with Chef Pascal Aussignac, eating the delicacies we had just learnt so much about in his kitchen. The menu included:

  • Landes White Asparague with Lemon Pulp and Spring Variations
  • Toasted Fennel, “Quinotto”, Trumpets & Tulip
  • Red Hot Chilli Berries

The menu was inspired and innovative. Using simple, seasonal ingredients Pascal produced beautiful and subtle plates of food, showcasing his skill and creativity.

First course was white asparagus, only in season for a couple of weeks of the year and easy to prepare if you know how. The flavour is so delicate you don’t need much else with them, but when Pascal offered a touch of truffle we couldn’t refuse!

Next up were the beautiful Springtime tulips, which taste not dissimilar to asparagus. Take out the bitter pollen in the centre and stuff with ingredients of your choice. Try to get Italian flowers, rather than those that have been mass grown in the Netherlands, as the Italian tulips have less pesticides on them.

Dessert was a clever creation using a reduction of red berries, floral herb ice-cream and tuille made from icing sugar and red pepper pulp. It was as delicious as it looked with a touch of spice contrasting with the sweet fruity flavours of spring.

It was a delight to be among the first media to learn about DS Automobiles’ partnership with the French Chef Pascal Aussignac and to hear about the search for 4 protégés that will take part in Taste London with him.

Chang Sensory Trails

Thai food and Chang beer are a popular pairing… the light pale lager is the perfect refreshment after a mouthful of spicy aromatic curry. So I wasn’t surprised when I heard Chang were partnering with renowned Bangkok eatery Bo.Lan to offer an authentic Thai food sensory trail inspired by chef memories, starting its 2017 world tour in London.

Chang Beer

Chef couple ‘Bo’ Songvisava and Dylan Jones (from Bo.Lan) will launch the taste adventure on 29th April at Old Spitalfields Market. Now in its second year this sensory trail is a free to enter, un-ticketed event which aims to deliver ‘the unexpected’ by introducing the world to a modern, refreshing take on Thai food, art and music.

London’s favourite Thai restaurants (including Patara, Busaba Eathai, Regional Thai Taste, Farang, 101 Thai kitchen, Janetira and Tawana) will be pairing up with the Bo.Lan team to offer a fun-filled event, which promises to be a feast for all the senses. Alongside the fantastic food the event will feature great tunes to set the vibe (including Live Lounge), an aromatic art installation built on the foundations of Thai cooking and a “Herb Hill” for visitors to explore.

There is also a chance to win a seat at the exclusive chef’s table (more information on the Chang Beer Facebook page here) where guests will experience an intimate VIP experience with Chefs Bo and Dylan. The Hari Hotel and Il Pampero Restaurant, Belgravia

The Hari Hotel has arrived in Belgravia and it is wonderful. This stylish new accommodation option is the perfect place to rest your head after a long day of shopping on Sloane Avenue, or to pop into for aperitivo in the Italian eatery, Il Pampero.

The Hari Hotel

The hotel is found on the corner of Chesham Place, a short walk from Hyde Park Corner, Victoria and Sloane Square tube stations, but tucked away from the noise and tourism of these popular areas. It was previously the Thompson Hotel before a recent renovation transformed it into the sophisticated Hari Hotel, named after the owner’s father. Inside, the building has a welcoming warmth and lovely feeling of luxury, with lavish velvet sofas and plenty of intriguing artwork adorning the walls.

I was very at home in the Studio Suite, a cosy but spacious room with enviable views over the townhouses of Belgravia. The decor is simple and chic with a hint of eccentricity… I loved creative touches like the animal-skin rug and the sheer curtains concealing extra sections of the room. The huge bed was blissfully comfortable, and the small writing desk was a pleasant place to work. Thoughtful amenities like a Nespresso machine and inspiring book collection give guests little reason to leave the room.

Our bathroom had serious wow-factor, with floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the streets below. The glamorous bathroom was clad in white marble with a powerful walk in shower and stocked with pear-scented toiletries from Noble Isle.

The resident restaurant, Il Pampero, is definitely not an afterthought with a menu of classic Italian dishes and drinks. After a round of immaculately-made cocktails we picked a couple of the pasta recipes on offer (both recommended by the waiter). Pappardelle All’Astice was plated in a majestic style, wonderful homemade strands of pasta with chunks of soft and creamy native lobster and sweet cherry tomatoes. Priced at £32 a plate, it seemed a little on the expensive side even if the ingredients were luxurious. I tried the rather more simple, but utterly delicious, Tagliolini Cacio E Pepe, homemade tagliolini with creamy cream and black pepper, mixed in a pecorino wheel at the table.

There were plenty of other tempting choices on the menu, but thanks to the generous pasta portion sizes we were too full to eat anything else, aside from a dessert to share, of course! The Il Pampero Tiramisu promised to be special, and it was certainly a unique take on the famous pudding. Layers of thick cream and sponge were covered in strong espresso, an intense but tasty take on the classic tiramisu.

The Hari Hotel

The next morning, our breakfast was a delight, with an array of treats served in the room. Don’t miss the ‘Hari Specials’… dishes like Nutella stuffed french toast with caramelised banana will put a smile on your face and get you through the morning. I also loved the tropical fruit salad which looked pretty enough to be on a Michelin-starred menu.

The Hari Hotel is an asset to the area, offering stylish visitors a beautiful place to stay, with delicious food and faultless service.
