Widbrook Grange, Bradford on Avon

Bradford-on-Avon is not an area I have thought of visiting before. A couple of hours drive from London, nearby to Bath and Somerset, it makes the perfect weekend escape from the city. Widbrook Grange is charming boutique hotel just a few minutes outside of town, an idyllic setting surrounded by greenery and rabbit-filled fields.

This hotel is a home away from home, with friendly communal spaces, and comfortable luxury bedrooms. There are family friendly rooms and the hotel can also accommodate pets. Each of the 19 rooms is decorated differently, with unique antiques and trinkets adding character. I recommend the Super Deluxe Double rooms, priced at £140 a night. These rooms are all located on the first floor of the main house, and are individually themed with art, music and literature.

I was in room 6, The Artist’s Room… the modern TV was placed in an old easel, while tea and coffee facilities were found in an antique painter’s box of watercolours. Large windows let in plenty of light to the spacious room, and offered much needed fresh air in the hot weather. The room had a lavish emperor bed and a beautiful roll top bath. A pretty teal-tiled en suite bathroom had a separate power shower with Bramley toiletries.

I spent most of my time at Widbrook relaxing and working in the room, but when I did venture out it was to the eclectic gin bar for a Friday night aperitif. The hotel’s speciality bar has around 150 varieties of gin, from big brands to small British and international distilleries. The knowledgable bartender chose us an unusual floral gin to have with our tonic, it was light, herbaceous and delicious. Next we went for dinner in the hotel restaurant, where the menu features British classics and farmhouse favourites. We indulged in burgers and sticky toffee pudding.

After dinner we couldn’t resist a little sunset walk around the property. The air was fresh and the countryside was silent, which I really appreciated after a hectic week in London.

We enjoyed breakfast in the room the next morning, feasting on croissants and coffee before heading off to explore the picturesque town of Bradford-on-Avon.

For a thoughtful and memorable weekend away from London, Widbrook Grange provides the perfect place to rest your head.
