Rococo Chocolates, Belgravia

Rococo Chocolates has always been my favourite chocolate shop in London, not just because the chocolate is delicious and ethically sourced, but because the brand is playful and creative and the in-shop service is always great. My fondness was confirmed last week when I visited Rococo in Belgravia for some last minute Christmas shopping.

The old fashioned facade is charming, and it’s this endearing branding which makes the shop so popular with passers-by as well as local regulars. This small shop is stuffed full of sugary delights, from the tempting glass case of individual chocolates to the beautifully wrapped bars and gift packs.

While visiting the Rococo shop I had a chance to learn about, and try out, the chocolate and gin pairing. This unusual class teaches attendees all about the flavour profiles of a few different boutique gins and flavoured Rococo chocolates, and how they match up and complement each other.

The exotic white chocolate and cardamon was paired with Pollination Gin, a herbaceous small-batch gin from Wales. Spiced milk chocolate worked wonderfully well with the smooth and rich Garden Tiger Dry Gin. And finally a highly floral violet dark chocolate was matched with Tarquins Gin from Cornwall, which also has notes of violet. I would never usually drink gin neat, but the sweetness from the chocolate takes the edge off and it’s a lovely combination.

Along with the pairing classes, Rococo also hold Chocolate Making lessons and I think either experience would make a lovely present for a chocolate lover. If you want something more conventional, chat to the knowledgeable staff behind the counter about which chocolate would suit your friends or family, or just stop by Rococo for one of their legendary thick hot chocolates, the ideal break from some festive shopping in Belgravia.
