Hot on the Highstreet Week 193: Redchurch Street

Blink and you might miss something on Redchurch Street. Every time I visit there are a host of new boutiques, cafés and shops to discover. When the sun came out yesterday Shoreditch was full of Londoners and tourists making the most of the dry weather and blue sky. After a stint at my favourite flower market on Columbia Road we wandered to Redchurch Street where East London shopping is at it’s very finest. Here’s my pick of the bunch:

Start your shopping at Labour and Wait where you can find classic homeware, stationery and utilitarian clothing. Your home will thank you!

Parisian perfume at Etat Libre D’Orange, trendy but sophisticated scents.

Shop and eat or vice versa at Cafe And, a clean cut contemporary venue with great design pieces and a lovely dining room.

Scandic simplicity rules at Hostem, where you can find a range of international designer clothing. The shop is filled with old furniture but feels alarmingly up to date.

Pasta lovers will delight in Burro e Salvia, Shoreditch’s first pastificio. For daytime dining and pasta making courses.

Recently the Redchurch community welcomed West London hit Aime. I love the carefully curated selection of designers, including the much coveted Isabel Marant.

Beautiful and obscure objects will overwhelm you at Maison Trois Garcons, which also houses a restaurant particularly popular on weekends.

For cool cuts visit Radio Salon, or for a retro up-do The Painted Lady does the best beehives in town.

Take a coffee break at Allpress Espresso, the caffeine obsessives who pour a perfect flat white and offer awesome homemade cakes.

Enjoy a healthy Peruvian brunch at Andina, I can recommend the Mini Chicharrones (Confit pork belly with rococo chilli jam) and the Choclo Corn Cake with fresco cheese, avocado and salsa. Wash it down with a freshly pressed apple or melon juice.

Can’t fit it all into one day? Stay overnight at Design haven, The Boundary Hotel.

The Clove Club, Shoreditch Town Hall

Whenever I see a new restaurant opening in London I am keen to get a table and suss out its food and friendliness. I was rather stunned in this case by the lofty and superior tone of the guys at The Clove Club. Annoyingly I was still desperate to try the food so I swallowed my pride and booked a table at this heavily hyped restaurant in Shoreditch Town Hall.

This new venture is a family affair, the Clove Club brothers are keen to present inventive and exciting cuisine in a laid back and handsomely historic environment. They have certainly achieved this – the food pushes boundaries whilst the restaurant oozes a charming old-fashioned elegance.

On a Saturday lunchtime we had a choice of two menus: the tasting menu, or the lunch option (snacks and three courses for £35). We opted for the set lunch preferring the selection and price!

While some of the staff were a little sullen, our waitress was kind and friendly offering us valuable advice.  Between the two of us we tried the whole menu.

Snacks:
Radishes, Black Sesame & Gochuchang
Crispy Chicken Feet & Devilled Spices
Violet Artichoke & Cod’s Roe

Starters:
Tamworth Pork Cheek, Black Pudding, Sweetcorn & Bobby Beans
Or
Flame Grilled Mackerel Tartare, Pickled Grapes & English Mustard

Mains:
Thornback Ray, Cauliflower, Tarragon & Elderberry Capers
Or
Roast Mallard, Baked Pumpkin, Juniper & Turnip Tops

Desserts:
Autumn Berries, Ewe’s Milk Mousse, Beremeal & Milk Crisps
Or
Poached William Pear, Chestnut Cream & Honey Granita

We sipped cocktails as the canapé-like snacks arrived promptly. My unlikely favourite was the chicken feet, ultra light and crispy with a moreish salty flavour. Of the starters, the cold, raw mackerel wasn’t a massive success… pickled grapes and mustard accentuated the strange flavour. The pork was delicate and delicious, I have never been brave enough to try black pudding before but must admit it complemented the meat and vegetables perfectly.

The ray was amazingly fine and very appealing dressed in herbs. My duck was tender and juicy, coated in a sumptuous sauce and served with interesting vegetables, a very successful dish I thought.

The desserts were light and refreshing. I particularly liked the warm berry compote with dollops of mousse and contrasting milk crisps, every mouthful was different.

We thoroughly enjoyed lunch at Clove Club even though I arrived sceptical. I feel strongly that as the London restaurant scene becomes more and more lucrative and competitive, an arrogant and elitist attitude is not acceptable. Clove Club is an example of fine food but foul attitude, hopefully if you visit you will only experience the former.

Hot on the Highstreet Week 164

I search far and wide for cool concept stores when I travel abroad, so it seems strange that I would overlook those precious shops right here on the London high street.

Selling an eclectic mix of art, home and fashion pieces from internationally recognised designers and emerging talents Milk Concept Store in Shoreditch is every bit as great as it sounds. Luca and Nathalie launched the shop in 2009 because they wanted a successful and unique destination boutique in the heart of buzzing Shoreditch. The store is housed in the historical and iconic The Clerk’s House which was originally occupied by clerics from St Leonard’s Church.
The shop was named milk as they believed it was a simple and easy to remember title, that everyone can relate to. The milk merchandise includes clothing, accessories and shoes: beautiful furniture pieces, funky jewellery, and quirky shoes. Piero Fornasetti, the Milanese painter, sculptor and product creator is perhaps the theme of the shop, his work can be noticed in every detail.

The current collection shows the influences and inspirations of the owners, a personal treasure trove which they hope will appeal equally to their creative clientele. They hope to inspire. I loved the Repetto glow in the dark shoes, the Vanessa Baroni neon chunky jewellery and the lovely Philippa Long crisp tailored white shirts.
You can find Milk Concept Boutique store at 118½ Shoreditch High Street, London E1 6JN.

The store is open 11am-7pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.  On Thursday it stays open until 8pm, Saturday 11am-6pm and Sunday 10.30am-6pm.
