Sandals Red Lane Spa, St Lucia

Everything at Sandals comes in twos: deck chairs on the beach, champagne glasses at the bar and massage beds at the spa.

On our final morning in the Caribbean, we visited the Sandals Grande Spa, Red Lane for a very special joint massage. Catering entirely for couples and particularly honeymooners, this treatment is extremely romantic and thoughtful. We were a little cynical at first but it is impossible not to enjoy the experience, it is so relaxing with highly trained therapists releasing all the aches and pains.

Red Lane uses a variety of brands including the brilliant Dermologica skincare range which I love. After changing into the warm robes, we were given three oils to smell and asked to choose the aroma we were most attracted to. I chose the vibrant and rich tension oil.

Once we were face down on the beds, the Sandals therapists worked their magic massaging our whole bodies paying particular attention to troublesome areas. It was one of the best massages I’ve ever had, soothing and completely relaxing. At the end of the massage our hands were linked together, I found this hilarious, but I can imagine it is a sweet touch for newlyweds. The room was attractively decorated with petals and heart shaped towels, very cosy and comforting and the perfect room to encourage relaxation.

After the treatment guests are encouraged to use the other amenities and equipment. We visited the steam rooms, but found they weren’t quite hot enough. Showered and dressed, I felt refreshed and energised, ready for the day ahead. There is so much to do at Sandals Grande but I would highly recommend Red Lane Spa, the most relaxing place on site, it will truly get you in the holiday mood.

If you are feeling extra lazy, treatments can be arranged in the comfort of your own room.

Soleil Spa at The Landings Hotel, St Lucia

The Gym and Soleil Spa at the Landings is as popular with visitors as it is with hotel guests. With impressive facilities and a wide range of treatments, it provides a lovely refuge out of the sun for an hour or two of solace and relaxation.

We went along after breakfast to try the joint couple’s massage, a blissful treatment for two. The changing rooms are filled with every lotion and potion you could ever need, including suncream and mouthwash; showers, a sauna and a whirlpool are available as well.

After changing into comfortable robes and slippers, we were led down a candlelit corridor and taken to our shared room. Face down on the bed, I noticed the spices on the floor ensuring there was an aromatic scent in the air.

The massages were divine, calming and relaxing. My masseuse asked me early on if the pressure was okay before continuing, and I drifted in and out of sleep as she used sweet smelling oils to work away the tension in my back and legs.

The Landings Spa is a destination in itself and is a great asset to the hotel. There are always great offers to help you get the best value from your spa experience.

Sandy Lane Hotel and Spa, Barbados

Je vois la vie en rose…

This perfect powder pink kingdom is renowned the world over for its uber-luxurious and indulgent quarters. Catering not just for the rich and famous, but instead for the richest and most famous with a waiting list of over two years to nab a Christmas stay.

Located on Barbados’ west coast, Sandy Lane remains the Queen of the millionaire’s mile, surrounded by less impressive competitors. A tour of the hotel lasted almost an hour, wandering in and out of the fine restaurant, cocktail bar, library and onsite diamond shop – useful for the regular marriage proposals. I was amazed by the attention to detail and despite the obvious signs of wealth, the hotel miraculously manages to avoid appearing ostentatious or crude. In short, it was a heaven I wished I could call home.

The spa is a palace in itself with a marble reception hall, numerous rooms and every facility available to provide for any guest’s needs. I relished the opportunity to feel like a Sandy Lane resident for a few hours donning a snuggly white robe and plush matching slippers.

We were each given a 30-minute hot stone massage, which was delivered with the utmost care and expertise. Immediately my masseuse noticed the tension in my upper back, and using his elbows he alleviated the stress and soothed my muscles. He then used hot stones to stretch and relax the muscles. I left feeling revived and much looser in my back and neck. We were then led to the water therapy area, which includes hydrotherapy pools, a steam room, waterfall bucket shower, cold room, rainforest shower and relaxation suite.

Before leaving we tried a cheeky cocktail in the Sandy Lane bar on the beach. While sipping our drinks we peered round surreptitiously to see if we could spot any celebrities, but the truth is… if you make it inside the gates of Sandy Lane Hotel, you are a celebrity too and that thought made me smile as we watched the pink sunset far in the distance.
