Masseria Trapana, Puglia

After a few days in Southern Italy I began to adapt to the slow pace of life and became accustomed to my beautiful surroundings. For the final stop of our Puglia tour we drove our little Fiat 500 hire car down to Lecce, for a two night stay at Masseria Trapana.

This boutique hotel took my breath away. When owner Rob Potter-Sanders bought the 16th century farmhouse a few years ago it was in ruins and had been neglected and untouched for over 100 years. After extensive rebuilding and sensitive renovation works, the hotel opened for business in October 2015, complete with the original olive press and the chapel of Santa Barbara, where the old frescoes have been restored.

Masseria Trapana is set amongst sixty hectares of ancient olive groves and has six gardens in the hotel grounds, where fruit and nut trees produce an abundant crop each year. Every corner has been carefully considered, with charming decor and furniture making it a blissful place to walk and spend time in.

There are just ten suites which gives the hotel an intimate and special feel, and there is also the option of renting out the whole masseria exclusively as a private villa, on a weekly basis, for special occasions.

We were extremely comfortable in our very spacious and airy Garden Suite. The design is similar in all the suites, a subtle cream colour scheme with accents of red. All the furniture chosen is of the finest quality, and a luxurious four poster bed is topped with lovely bespoke linen.

A small private garden brings light into the room and also provides the perfect place for a giant bathtub, so you can bathe outdoors beneath your own orange tree, which has the most exquisite floral scent.

The bathroom was a sanctuary of honey-hued stone and indulgent features. Kitted out with a powerful rain shower, dual sinks and chic striped towels. I was more than excited to discover our bathroom stocked with Aesop miniature toiletries – my favourite beauty brand from Australia.

If you decide to spend your days at the hotel, the pool is a lovely place to unwind and soak up the sun. For day excursions there are plenty of charming towns nearby to visit. Lecce is the closest, just a 15 minute drive away, slightly further afield you will find picturesque coastal villages like Gallipoli and Otranto. The helpful staff at Masseria Trapana will help you plan every aspect of your Puglian itinerary so you can make the most of this enchanting area.

Local restaurants can be hit and miss in this area, so after a few nights exploring the culinary options in Lecce you may prefer to enjoy a leisurely dinner at the hotel, where local chef Maria Carla serves up delicious traditional dishes. We enjoyed the flavoursome speciality ‘Trapana’ pasta dish and a perfectly cooked piece of chicken wrapped in parma ham. For dessert, I was delighted to be served panna cotta, one of my all time favourite Italian puddings. Wine from the region is served with dinner, or the waiters will make you an aperitif of your choice.

Breakfast is always served outside, in the dewy morning light beneath the trees. A buffet of continental treats includes traditional pastries, fruit, meats and cheese. Being Australian, Rob caters specially for his guests from down under with lamingtons (sponge cake coated in chocolate and coconut) and vegemite! Don’t miss the fresh juices made from the citrus trees that surround you.

Masseria Trapana

Masseria Trapana is a paradisiacal retreat in the idyllic Puglian landscape… as soon as you’ve visited once you’ll be planning annual return visits to this magical home away from home.

Hotel Tresanton, St Mawes

There are lots of characterful b&b’s to choose from when it comes to booking accommodation in Cornwall, but special hotels are harder to find. Hotel Tresanton in St Mawes set the standard when it opened on the Cornish coast in 1999. Owned and designed by the illustrious and creative Olga Polizzi the house oozes style, with charming details wherever you look.

Hotel Tresanton, St Mawes

St Mawes is an idyllic and unspoilt village filled with bobbing boats and dedicated fisherman. When you are not enjoying the luxuries of Tresanton head to nearby St Mawes Castle or drive to nearby Lost Gardens of Heligan for a magical walk. There are plenty of great restaurants nearby making use of the plentiful fresh ingredients that surround them, or eat at the hotel where the relaxed bistro serves simple but delicious comfort food.

Hotel Tresanton, St Mawes

Hotel Tresanton has 30 rooms and suites, each is different, showcasing antiques and artworks which Olga has discovered over time. Our suite overlooked the expansive sea with a lovely balcony and surrounded by exotic plants. The two bedrooms were beautiful, instantly welcoming with soft furnishings and luxurious details.

I loved the splashes of colour and contrasting patterns which added charm and personality to the suite. The living area featured a large plush sofa, high-tech TV and tea making facilities, when requested.

I am a huge mosaic fan, so was excited to discover our bathroom floor was decorated with mosaic waves. A huge bathtub was a welcome addition to our bathroom and I was also grateful for the lovely bathrobes and full range of REN toiletries.

Breakfast is served in the relaxed restaurant… a tempting array of pastries, cereals and fruits are laid out each morning for guests or you may wish to choose from the more filling a la carte menu. I enjoyed a continental spread of food with my strong coffee and freshly squeezed juice.

For a real treat book a trip out on Tresanton’s beautiful restored 1930’s sail boat, Pinuccia. From May until the end of September the experienced hotel skipper can take you sailing round Falmouth Bay, so you can appreciate the beauty of the area from the sea.

Grand Hotel du Palais Royal, Paris

There are many magical squares in Paris, but for me, the most special and iconic is Palais Royal, a central courtyard with a subtle charm and beauty. I felt very privileged to receive the opportunity to stay in the only 5-star hotel in this exclusive area, Grand Hotel du Palais Royal, with its luxurious bedrooms and spectacular views.

Grand Hotel du Palais Royal

The hotel is just three years old, but already has a fine reputation amongst locals and travellers. Found within a historic 18th century building with contemporary design by architect Pierre-Yves Rochon, it is an exceptional combination of old-fashioned grandeur and modern elegance. It is an artistic neighborhood with the Louvre, the Place Vendome and the Tuileries Garden nearby, and in the hotel lobby important artworks from the Louvre cast workshop feature prominently.

The boutique property has 68 bedrooms, each individually designed with luxurious fabrics and furniture. We were very comfortable in our junior suite, Room 503. With a small balcony overlooking the city and a lovely living area with champagne and patisserie treats, it was a stylish and indulgent Parisian base. The suite was subtly decorated in shades of lilac and grey with tasteful lighting and dramatic abstract artwork.

The dreamy bed was silky and soft with fluffy pillows and topped with a beautiful purple blanket. Despite the warm weather I wanted to wrap myself up in the luxurious duvet, and needless to say I slept blissfully well each night. The minimalist white bathroom was equipped with a walk in rain shower and separate bath. Toiletries by Atelier Cologne were generously stocked in the bathroom and seemed to be very good quality when I washed my hair.

Grand Hotel du Palais Royal

The hotel provides top quality spa experiences and dining options for guests and external visitors. Downstairs, a lavish mosaic hammam is a relaxing retreat that I wish I’d taken advantage of, and there is also a gym with Technogym equipment. The spa uses top Parisian brand Carita for their treatments and a beauty salon offers manicures, pedicures and hairdressing.

Grand Hotel du Palais Royal

The breakfast at Grand Hotel du Palais Royal is an extravagant array of French delicacies and a la carte dishes. It felt particularly special enjoyed in the comfort of our own room. Choose from freshly baked pastries, fresh juices, strong coffee, eggs and bacon, cooked to your preference. I especially relished the little luxuries in our breakfast of creamy French butter and delicious fruit jams.

With a prime location and pretty rooms, Grand Hotel du Palais Royal is a fabulously French accommodation for the most sophisticated traveller. I can’t think of a more magical Parisian hotel.
