Hot on the Highstreet Week 205 – Bangkok

Chatuchak – This weekend only market is North of uptown Bangkok. It is the largest market in Thailand covering over 27 acres with over 15,000 stalls. You can find everything here, Section 6 is particularly good for vintage finds, whilst other areas focus on accessories, jewellery, phone covers and gifts. I recommend wandering through and browsing the colourful array of goods with a freshly squeezed orange juice in hand. When you are feeling weary, stop for a 30 minute foot massage (150THB – £3).

Open Wednesday and Thursday for plants and flowers 6am-6pm, Friday for wholesale 6am-6pm, Saturday and Sunday whole market 6am-6pm. Best to get the Skytrain to Mo Chit station (exit 1) as traffic can be bad.

Propaganda – Now located in two venues (The Emporium in Sukhumvit, and fourth floor of the Siam Discovery Center) this design led boutique sells a range of intriguing items, most memorable perhaps are the witty plastic pieces, like the molar shaped stools.

MBK Center – This futuristic shiny building is home to many familiar brands both authentic and fake. If you are looking for a good quality imitation this is the place to spend your cash. 2000 stores and services spread over eight floors, it is heaven for shopaholics, and just across the walkway from Siam Discovery and Paragon shopping centres.

Almeta – Most dash to Jim Thompson House for their silk tailoring in Bangkok, however Almeta offers the highest quality luxury handmade silk and has an impressive Silk a la Carte service. Customers can choose from over 1000 iridescent silk colours, yarn types and weights. Almeta are also the creators of Lazy Silk, the only machine-washable Thai silk. If you want something tailor made try to leave time for a couple of fittings.

Find the shop on Sukhumvit 23 and walkable from Asok Skytrain station.

It’s Happened To Be A Closet – A mad and eclectic retro bohemian clothing store, that also serves as a tea room and nail salon. You could spend hours rummaging through the pretty floor-to-ceiling piles.

Hot on the Highstreet Week 200

Chiswick High Road has an assortment of dowdy clothes shops between the friendly cafes and restaurants that populate this West London thoroughfare. When I first spotted the Me + Em shop, I was instantly drawn to the name, it is a phrase I say often as my best friend’s name is Em! The Chiswick branch is just a pop-up boutique, it is the dainty shop on Connaught Street that you really need to visit for a full array of the chic and comfortable, candy-coloured clothes.

Me + Em offers ‘understated luxury for women with understated style’ hoping to provide all the essentials we need for an effortlessly stylish wardrobe. The brand was launched in 2009 by founder and creative director Clare Hornby and has gone from strength to strength since. Classic tailoring and luxurious fabrics are of the utmost importance throughout the collections. I love the wearability of the garments and the fact that the pieces look lovely alone or grouped into a full outfit. They are reminiscent of Parisian shapes and styles but with a pinch of modernism and fun.

Recently Poppy Delevingne has shown a particular interest in the brand, gallivanting around in Me + Em baggy cropped jumpers and the cashmere comforts. I’ve selected three of the tops to highlight the practical and pretty versatility of the current collection. The nautical Contrast Sleeve Jumper is great for casual or smart occasions. With a structured boyfriend cropped cut, white body with dark navy sleeves, it is striking but elegant, and being 100% cotton, it is easy to wash and comfortable. My eye instantly was drawn to the bubblegum pink Box Cardigan hanging on the shop rail. An addictive bright hue, this cardigan has been amazingly popular with both customers and staff. Made from fine merino wool it is delicate and thin but warm and versatile. Particularly pretty paired with a white silk shirt, it will be a cheerful addition to any ensemble. The pale blue is beautiful too, and ideal for a fresh Spring look. The Box Hoody is the most luxurious of the tops on offer. Made from gloriously soft 100% cashmere with a snuggly hood, it is the ideal relaxed but indulgent weekend garment. Available in a variety of colours customers can choose muted shades: pale grey or sandy beige, or for a more grown up look, black is on offer too.

Me + Em make my kind of clothes… adaptable and stylish, I wanted almost every piece in the store.

Welcome to London Mr Lagerfeld. The maestro of materials, controller of couture, and the king of fashion has finally set up shop in our capital city, following 18 other international and European stores. Continuing Coco Chanel’s legacy is not an easy task but Lagerfeld has bettered the brand and introduced his own eponymous label to the highstreet offering monochrome Karl inspired clothing and accessories.

Karl’s fashion friends gathered for the Regent’s Street shop opening last Friday evening, now the largest Lagerfeld store in Europe. You will only see black and white here, the venue is slick and glossy with smooth surfaces and mirrors, faux fur furniture and ‘I Love Dust’ graffiti-style artwork designed especially for the shop. Inside the world of Karl you can buy women’s and men’s clothes, handbags, sunglasses and shoes. You will find everything you need to replicate the stylish look Karl is known so well for, including signature white collars.

The UK store also offers a brilliantly British capsule collection, a special range just for the UK. This includes a Union Jack sweatshirt and tokidoki dolls of Karl in a monochrome suit with an additional patriotic British tie. If you can’t afford Chanel prices, snap up a little piece of Karl at this exciting store. With ipads installed into the walls of each changing room, customers can take ‘selfies’ in the Karl outfits and even alter the filters checking yourself out before purchasing anything. Mini ipads can also be found throughout the store allowing visitors to browse the entire Chanel collection virtually.

The Karl Lagerfeld store is now open at 145-147 Regent Street.
