Gray’s Court Hotel, York

Seconds walk from the great York Minster, down a pretty pathway, you will find the most unexpected five star hotel. Gray’s Court is a charming and quaint historic house. After staying just one night at this boutique property, I can’t imagine why visitors to York would choose anywhere else to spend the weekend.

Turning into the hotel driveway, I had that tingling feeling that I had discovered something special… the cobbled entrance is illuminated by lanterns hanging in the trees and the house glows enticingly.

A ‘country house in the city’ – this hotel is definitely a one-off. It is rare to find a heritage property so perfectly adapted for staying guests. I felt instantly excited by the personality and charm of Gray’s Court when I swung open the grand wooden front door. Artwork and photographs hang attractively on the walls, many of which are for sale. In keeping with the style of the house, the communal spaces and bedrooms are designed carefully with period features and furnishings but with alluring and indulgent modern touches.

There are just seven rooms from which to choose. We were staying in the Elizabeth Gray, a room overlooking the walled garden facing towards the city walls. This deluxe suite is like a beautiful sitting room and bedroom in one, ideal for a couple desiring a relaxing and stress-free stay.

Moments after we arrived, fresh mint tea and hot from the oven cookies were delivered to our door… apparently all guests receive this welcome snack no matter what time of day they arrive. I wasn’t hungry but they were so good, we managed to polish off all four within minutes!

Antiques in the room create a grand but homely feel… a lovely muted cream and blue colour scheme with a marble fireplace and glittering chandelier. The monumental bed is covered with with a puffed up goose-down duvet, and ensures a good night’s sleep. The bathroom is gorgeous, with a huge bath below large windows, a bright and airy place to refresh and revitalise.

Breakfast is served in the popular parlour downstairs. With picturesque views of the city, it is a lovely place to sit and enjoy a meal. As well as the fruit, cereal and juice the chef is on hand to prepare your favourite cooked breakfast… as long as he has the ingredients he will make whatever you desire. I can particularly recommend the epic pancakes with bacon and maple syrup.

Gray’s Court Hotel will provide a heavenly and historic retreat for anyone visiting York, I was completely enchanted.
