Hot on the Highstreet Week 111

My beauty essentials change with each season… in summer I choose products that nourish and protect while encouraging tanning: rich moisturising hair serums and sprays to avoid dry split hair and simple make-up that accentuates sun-kissed skin and adds a warm glow.

With new products on the market all the time, it is difficult to find the best, so I have selected a few fail-safe favourites to pack in your suitcase this summer.

HOOLA – This famous Benefit essential is a beauty bag must have. Easy to apply, ensuring all over even coverage, it lasts well, giving a deep honey brown rather than an offensive orange hue. The bronzer comes with a super cute mini brush that fits conveniently in the box, enabling easy application and storage. Buy here.

INSTITUT ESTHEDERM TAN ENHANCER – I love any product that safely helps me tan. Recently I discovered the Beesline collection in Beirut and now I’m delighted to have found the Institut Esthederm range of luxurious summer lotions that protect and enhance, helping you achieve a natural healthy tan. The tan enhancer doubles up as an aftersun and tan extender; it should be applied directly after sun exposure to repair and soothe the skin and everyday after your holiday to extend your tan. It will calm down redness and helps deepen your colour. The product also contains very subtle shimmer adding an extra glow. Another Esthederm product worth trying is the Bronz Repair, the best-selling sun care lotion for beautiful bodies. This cream protects the skin as it tans and cutaneous tissue is restructured, allowing the body to maintain its youthful appearance in the sun. I found that applying this product once every few hours while sitting in the sun prevented me from burning whilst intensifying my tan. Buy Institut Esthederm products here.

KERASTASE is my favourite for all year round haircare, and their range of sun specific products are particularly effective. This professional brand understands what your hair needs, protecting your precious tresses in harsh damaging sunlight and adding moisture and shine. Aqua Seal and Huile Celeste are both summer holiday essentials. The Aqua Seal hair oil smooths and calms unruly dry, weathered locks, and you only need a tiny drop so it lasts for ages! Huile Celeste contains a beautifully subtle shimmer perfect for glamorous sunbathing excursions…rub a little bit in your hands and evenly run your fingers through the lengths and ends of your hair… avoid roots to prevent unwanted greasiness. Finally the Kerastase Elixir oil is great for intensive recovery of dry wiry hair, making it feel and look softer and shinier immediately. Buy here.

My last product will help you achieve wavy natural summer hair and volume even in the heat of summer. The new SHU UEMURA ‘VOLUME MAKER’ is magic… a truly unique and innovative product. The invisible texturising powder lifts the hair from the root and instantly transforms the look. Better still the dust comes with an easy to use brush for easy application and it’s perfect for handbag storage. Beach ready hair in a flash. Buy here.

Now that you’ve got your beauty bag for summer sorted, you just need to book your flight to an exotic beach.

Cutler and Gross glasses are probably the least “highstreet” glasses brand out there, and yet I can’t help mentioning them for my weekly fashion feature, despite their substantial price tags and designer status.

The renowned designers are known for their timeless style and hip relevance, they never go out of fashion merely increase in worth as the frames become valuable vintage specimens! And now the C&G empire is growing as more and more designers collaborate with them, creating new funky and fabulous specs. Currently Giles, Erdem and Margiela are showcasing their wacky collections.

The rainbow choice of fantastic frames and lovely lenses makes choosing glasses in Cutler and Gross fun. The flagship store in Knightsbridge is beautiful, a sweet shop of colourful designs with the amazing policy that “anything is possible”. Your glasses are adapted and completed within minutes in the lab next door, while you wait.

Many customers design their own glasses entirely, customising the finer details to make them one-of-a-kind bespoke. Aside from falling madly in love with half of the quirky light lilac and grass green frames, I started fantasising about my very own Thoroughly Modern pair tailored precisely to suit my brand. A small cats-eye frame (not dissimilar to the Pink Ladies in Grease), a bright candy pink hue (obviously) and my TMM logo engraved in the inner arms. One day these dream glasses will be mine.

In the meantime I have settled for the gorgeous classic gold Aviators from the Premium range, with specially chosen Green iridescent mirror lenses to add a bit of extra sparkle.

Even if you’re not intending to buy a pair of glasses, I would highly recommend visiting the magnificent Cutler and Gross shop, it really is a Willy Wonka workshop of wonderfulness.

The glowing H&M ads adorning London bus stops make one yearn for some warm weather, here in England summer seems to barely exist anymore. Glistening golden bodies suited in gorgeous bright skimpy bikinis lying languidly on loungers appear to be from another planet. H&M bikinis look divine on the models and after trying and buying them I can promise they suit the normal body as well.

I have just been on two beach blogging trips, Marrakech and then Beirut. Both required a serious assortment of poolside garments. It is always nice to have a selection of bikinis for summer holidays away… preferably a different swimsuit for each day, as you don’t want to be seen in the same thing twice! But swimsuits can be expensive, especially when you have to buy top and bottom separately!

H&M have been my life-saver this year, with a selection of bikinis in numerous designs and colours, there are options for every beach bod. This stylish collection features exotic patterns and flattering one-colour looks. Choose from an updated bandeau style, classic balconettes or triangle tops. I bought three, a bright blue, an electric pink and a classic peachy orange set. On holiday they were comfortable and looked good before and after tanning thanks to the cheerful hues. H&M sell their bikinis individually, which is perfect for girls who need different sizes for top and bottoms. Most are priced at £7.99 for the top and £9.99 for the bottoms… so a grand total of £17.98 per set. The only fault is that each bikini varies enormously in size, so I would advise trying them each on in-store before committing to buy… in some of the sets I found I was a size 8 others felt better in size 14!

I am lazy when it comes to highstreet shopping, dreading the chaos and clutter of the cheaper fashion stores. I am so glad my friend dragged me into H&M this summer though. I have now got this season’s swimwear wardrobe completely sorted thanks to this shop’s chic and sophisticated bikini range.
