The Grand Daddy Hotel, Cape Town

After a long flight over from London, The Grand Daddy Hotel in the centre of Cape Town was the perfect place to rest our weary heads. The Grand Daddy is one of the most historic hotels in town, the building was originally built in 1874 and first opened its doors as a hotel in 1895.

As well as Daddy’s rooms and two Daddy’s suites, there is also an Airstream Trailer Rooftop Park with 7 unique airstreams (1930s American caravans). Each Airstream has a queen-size bed, wet room with a shower & WC and TV and Aircon. Prices for airstreams start at £135 per room per night.

Our colourful airstream was called Safari, inspired by the “authentic African beauty of Jaci’s Lodges in the Madikwe Game Reserve and the Cheetah Plains Private Game Reserve at Sabi Sands.” It was a cosy and characterful place to spend a night. Despite the lack of space there was a very comfortable bed and all the amenities you could need squeezed into the airstream.

Capetonian interior designers ‘Beach House Interiors’ were in charge of the brand new South African decor at the Grand Daddy Hotel and the small details are evident throughout the rooms and the common areas.

Along with the rooms the hotel has the oldest operational lift in Cape Town (over 120 years old), an outdoor Pink Flamingo Rooftop Cinema and rooftop bar (popular for sundowners). It was a pleasure using this miraculous lift to get to and from our rooftop room.

The hotel eatery, Thirty Ate is open to all guests and external visitors. We enjoyed a decadent breakfast here… Daddy’s Pancakes (topped with seasonal berries, grilled banana, bacon, maple syrup) were a highlight, paired with orange juice and strong coffee.

Grand Daddy Hotel is the ideal place to experience a little bit of Cape Town history, ideally located on Long Street, this boutique accommodation is perfect for a short or long stay in this dynamic city.
