Hot on the Highstreet Week 88

If there is a King of Fashion it surely must be Karl Lagerfeld, the legend behind Chanel. This Parisian brand is the ultimate designer desire, and the object of many a girl’s obsession. In addition to his numerous Chanel collections, Lagerfeld now brings hungry victims of fashion, KARL, a new hip label. I cannot deny my longstanding adoration for Chanel, so the launch of KARL is very exciting.

The initial capsule range is almost entirely black and silver with a flash of white – a futuristic, rock’n’roll delight. There are downtown classics for the modern girl: biker vests, blazers, embellished collars, leather sneakers, cool white t-shirts and little black dresses, all very wearable. The clothes illustrate Lagerfeld’s clever edge and fashion forward creativity.

Surprisingly this label is not yet extortionately overpriced. Considering the high quality tailoring and materials, it seems quite reasonable with prices ranging from £20 for the printed canvas shopper bag to (a less reasonable) £980 for the Jacey snakeskin-effect leather jacket. I love the accessories, in particular the cutaway leather gloves and stiff quirky collars. With an eye for fashion and a head for business, Lagerfeld is taking advantage of rapidly growing online fashion sales choosing to launch his affordable label solely on the internet. With unexpected candour, the designer describes himself as a ‘fashion opportunist’. Lagerfeld’s 2004 ‘Karl Lagerfeld for H&M’ collaboration collection sold out within minutes, and I’m sure this label will receive the same frenzied reception.
