THOROUGHLY MODERN MISS: Wildebeest, Falmouth

Falmouth’s vegan restaurant, Wildebeest, offers a cosy atmosphere and beautiful attention to food, with a small and well-thought out menu that wouldn’t be out of place in a fine-dining restaurant.

Wildebeest Restaurant, Falmouth

The service is friendly and welcoming in this tiny Scandinavian-style café, with walls adorned with animal-loving chalk scribbles and floating cacti. Nothing is too much trouble, there’s never a rush, and three courses while away easily amongst a relaxed and warm setting, surrounded by happy eaters.

When the food does arrive, the delicacy, colour and conception of the plates is inspired. Turnip carpaccio, pickled shallots, mustard cream, dill, German rye bread: we spend a few minutes admiring the attention to detail in the plating of the food, and then after tasting, the intensity of flavour that’s condensed into a dish so small and beautiful. The mustard cream cuts through the sweet turnip and tangy shallot, perfect with the crunchy texture of the rye. This dish was the highlight of the evening.

For the main course- a spicy Laksa with butternut squash and flat rice noodles, mange tout, pea tendrils. The soup was a little tame, but packed a warm ginger-y punch and was presented well, considering the difficulty in making a broth look good.

The star of the main dishes was, however, the crispy polenta with a tomato and oregano sauce. Served with kale, oyster mushrooms, almond ricotta, crunchy butterbeans and micro garlic chives, this dish exploded in flavour that was rich and comforting, despite the complex combination of ingredients.

For dessert we shared a warm chocolate and raspberry brownie and some peanut butter and chocolate fudge swirl ice cream. The perfect indulgence after a delicious supper (and you couldn’t tell it was all dairy-free).

Wildebeest accept walk-ins (apart from on Tuesday’s, when they’re closed, in the most Cornish-life way), but booking ahead is advisable- with less than 20 seats available- this restaurant is only getting more and more popular in a county that’s expanding its food expectations and broadening its culinary horizons.

Naughty Piglets, Brixton

Naughty Piglets is the kind of neighbourhood eatery you move flat to be nearer. The restaurant was set up by husband and wife team, Joe and Margaux Sharratt, in March 2016 who aim to provide visitors with a considered natural wine list and a frequently changing seasonal menu, based around charcoal grilled recipes. Needless to say the 34-cover venue is always packed, with locals, and those travelling from other areas of London to try out this winning combination.

Inside the restaurant is modest but stylish, with eight bar seats which boast a kitchen view, for those who want to be closer to the action! We sat here and enjoyed observing the restaurant as a busy Friday evening unfolded. I let Margaux choose our wine, with sommelier experience from some of London’s most successful culinary spots I figured she would pick better than me. We tried a glass of two whites, a 2013 ‘La Rue aux Loups’ Chenin Blanc and the very unique 2014 Cheverny Tradition, from Domaine de Montcy. Both wonderfully refreshing and satisfying at the same time.

The menu is short and sweet with options to suit every palate. Locals who visit often can relish different dishes each week as the recipes change with the produce available and the seasonality of ingredients. Roast Pumpkin with Goat’s Cheese and Parma Ham was a rustic dish of subtly complementing Autumn flavours, smokey chunks of fleshy pumpkin with salty ham and cheese. I can’t miss out on burrata if I see it on a menu, it is difficult to go wrong with a dollop of the creamiest soft cheese, but the version Joe has created is particularly lavish, served on a bed of perfectly seasoned caponata.

From the meat and fish options we chose Scallops with Cauliflower and XO sauce, Beef Rump with bon marrow toast, shallots & watercress and BBQ pork belly with sesame and Korean spices, a favourite which has been on the menu since opening in March. Scallops were delicate and succulent paired with silky cauliflower puree and a hint of citrusy yuzu which cut through the richness of the dish. I loved the simple, slick presentation of the pork, but found the whole dish too salty, even with assortment of green vegetables. Silence fell over the table as we devoured the beef, an utterly delicious plate of wholesome British flavours, compiled in an elegantly French way.

There were two decadent puddings to choose from, naturally we ordered one of each. Chocolate mousse with salted caramel and hazelnuts was like a grown-up Mars bar deconstructed on the plate, with oozing dangerously sweet caramel sauce and the smoothest mousse you could imagine. Baked vanilla cheesecake with figs was blissfully soft, topped with contrasting crunchy puffed rice and served with ruby red fig segments.

Naughty Piglets

I’m lucky enough to only be a short bus ride away from Naughty Piglets, and I can’t wait to spend more Friday evenings here, unwinding with a good glass of wine and a lot of completely delicious food.

A Foodie Summer in Paris

Paris is beautiful in every season, but feels particularly romantic and special in summer when the historic buildings glow in the sun and the squares are filled with people enjoying the city of love. I recently stopped by the French capital for a quick update on the newest restaurants and cafes.

Cafe Kitsume Paris

I followed the fashionistas to the Palais Royal gardens where Cafe Kitsune is hidden beneath the historic arches. The tiny design cafe has all kinds of treats to enjoy after a tiring shopping spree. Order a creamy coffee and a fox shortbread and enjoy on an outdoor table in the sunshine.

E'Clair de Genie

The L’Eclair de Genie pastries are very Instagrammable and have become a must on any foodie’s visit to Paris. Try the salted caramel butter flavour, from one of the patisserie branches located around the city.

Mori Yoshida

Japanese pastry chef Mori Yoshida‘s shop in Paris is a pristine gallery of beautiful cakes and sweets. It was almost impossible to choose from the cabinets of delicate and sugary works of art. If you visit in the morning opt for a croissant, or for an afternoon snack you can’t beat the colourful macarons.

Telescope coffee

Telescope coffee shop is rumoured to serve the best caffeine in Paris, and I was certainly impressed when I stopped by one morning. Tucked away in the 1st Arrondissement the premium speciality coffee here is popular with locals and tourists alike.

Liberte Patisserie

Liberte Patisserie Boulangerie by Benoit Castel is a stylish and modern bakery nearby to the Canal St Martin. Whether you choose a perfect baguette or a cream vanilla tart, the prices are reasonable and the taste is second to none.

Boulangerie du Pain et des idees

Many consider Boulangerie du Pain et Des Idees to be the maker and seller of the best croissants in town. This cosy traditional bakery is unmissable for its buttery and indulgent croissants, pain au chocolat and pistachio escargot (spiral pastries). But visit early in the day as they sell out fast.

Saturne

Saturne (an anagram for natures) is one of the newer Michelin star restaurants in Paris. This minimalist contemporary restaurant is run by chef Sven Chartier and sommelier Ewen Lemoigne who present a simple but refined menu that is creative and seasonal.

septime

It is not easy to get a table at Bertrand Grébaut’s hip and beautiful Septime restaurant. The chic industrial dining room is a lovely place to spend time enjoying a delicious lunch with friends. If you can’t get a reservation try the sister seafood restaurant, Clamato, a few doors down.

Ellsworth Paris

When it comes to eating American food in Paris there are plenty of exemplary venues to choose from. Ellsworth is a newer addition to the scene with a particularly delicious brunch menu. Don’t miss the irresistible fried chicken.
