Hot on the Highstreet Week 121

I can’t believe I’ve never talked about Toms before. A revolutionary shoe and a revolutionary concept… with every pair you purchase TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need, ‘One for One’. Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS, was struck by the poverty in many of the communities he was serving. He saw so many basic human needs that were still unmet. He came to a startling conclusion: TOMS could be more than a shoe company – it should be a One for One™ company. With so many different needs around the world, he felt TOMS had an obligation to try to improve as many lives as possible.

I have often admired these perfectly simple shoes on passers-by; when my Topshop ballet shoes became soaked through a few weeks ago, I felt it was time to finally treat myself to some TOMS. I got mine in a shade of neon (obviously), a pretty orange. The bright hue is flattering to skin tones enhancing my summer tan and adding a flash of colour to my feet. My only complaint…  the lighter colours get dirty pretty quickly, mine had marks almost immediately. If you are between sizes, I would advise going for the smaller option as TOMS do tend to stretch considerably and mould to your feet. I wore mine all summer, they are very comfortable (with a spongy absorbent sole which allows you to walk for hours), don’t get sweaty and are predominantly weatherproof, suitable for rain or shine. Priced around £30, they are affordable though not cheap. The canvas shoes are available in numerous colours and varying styles, there is something to suit everyone.

TOMS now also offers seriously cool eyewear with a range of hip sunglasses and help to give sight to the partially-sighted in more than ten countries worldwide. With the brand expanding day by day, TOMS seem to be making a real difference. I, for one, am a massive fan of the product and idea.

THE SUPPERHEROES SERIES

By day they walk amongst us, spending their weeks unnoticed, as they live out a normal life as teachers, journalists and doctors. But at the weekend, their super-human cooking powers come to life, turning their homes into pop-up restaurants  around London to become  ‘The Supperheroes Series’.

From August to October 2012, these culinary crusaders are working with international aid agency Action Against Hunger to help fight the injustice of child hunger around the world, conjuring up the most magical menus and using their own recipes to bring delicious food to paying diners – with all profits going towards this worthy cause. All events are organised in association with foodie activities website Edible Experiences and each and every Supperhero has their own range of secret weapon dishes from the four-corners of the globe, ranging from Singaporean Laksa Noodles, to Mauritian Curry and Italian Meatballs – guaranteed to entertain and satisfy their guests.

As an added incentive to dine and donate, guests who attend at least three Supperheroes events during the campaign will be entered into a draw to win fabulous foodie prizes, including a delicious hamper of unearthed® goodies; a three hour Asian cookery masterclass for two at School of Wok in Covent Garden and an amazing ‘Sausage-Wrangling’ course for two at The Butchery in London Bridge; where you can learn the secrets of how to make your own sausages!

For more information on all supperlicious events taking place throughout The Supperheroes Series, go to www.edibleexperiences.com/supperheroes or, if you think you have what it takes to hold your own, visit http://www.actionagainsthunger.org.uk/supperheroes/for more details on how you can become a supperhero too.

Millie Mackintosh at the Sunday Strut for The Prince’s Trust

On Sunday 19th August 2012, 100 lucky individuals will have the chance to strut 6 kilometres from Cardinal Place in Victoria to One New Change in the historic City of London. The Sunday Strut will be led by none other than Made in Chelsea‘s style sweetheart, Millie Mackintosh. The convoy of fashionistas will wind their way past Big Ben, the London Eye, and over the stunning Millennium Bridge with the finishing line just a stone’s throw from St Paul’s Cathedral.

This is not your average charity walk! Strutters can add finishing touches to their look at the start line in a pop-up hair and make-up parlour, including the latest Caviar Nails and Glitter Masques from celeb favourites InParlour beauty team, on the roof garden at Cardinal Place. Once strutters have refuelled and before things kick off, they can look forward to a high energy warm up from London’s coolest fitness club, Gymbox.

After taking in the sights of the Capital over a fashionable 6k, strutters will arrive at One New Change where they can swap their bottled water with a celebratory glass of champagne courtesy of Searcys Champagne Bar. And the fun doesn’t stop there as an exclusive after party will finish off the day in style at Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen. Ramsay’s rustic restaurant will be serving up sumptuous Strut cocktails, courtesy of Grey Goose Vodka, as guests enjoy live music at the intimate Vintage Fashion Tea party.

This unique take on the traditional charity walk has been organised by One New Change and Cardinal Place, two of Land Securities’ flagship shopping destinations in London, with all proceeds going directly to its charity partner, The Prince’s Trust. Since The Trust was founded in 1976, the youth charity has supported 650,000 disadvantaged young people across the UK, giving them the skills, confidence and motivation to move into the workplace.

There are just 100 places for this exclusive event so to bag yours now all you have to do is register online, then set up your Virgin Money Giving page and confirm your registration by paying the first £25 then raise a minimum of £100 in total (so an additional £75), for The Prince’s Trust.
