Como Shambhala Urban Escape, Park Lane

Como spa

A few years ago I visited the Como Hotel in Bangkok, a serene oasis in the centre of the chaotic and hot city. The Metropolitan Como Hotel in London has a similar feel, laid back luxury with a hint of Asian influence. The spa is hidden on the second floor, a discreet but luxurious little retreat, far removed from the business focused Park Lane below.

I was greeted by several members of staff who showed me around the small spa. After a cup of zingy homemade ginger tea, I changed into a giant fluffy bathrobe and enjoyed a ten minute session in the steam room. Feeling cleansed and refreshed, I realised it was time for my treatment, the signature Como Shambhala massage with Yuki.

Tucked up and cosy in the massage bed, I felt relaxed for the first time in days and ready for the pampering session. This massage uses long hand strokes to give the body balance and harmony. I had a choice of aromatic oil scents and chose the Calm variety, a mix of lavender and geranium. Despite her shy demeanour, Yuki had great strength and undeniable ability. She seemed to instantly work out the maze of knots in my back and used miraculous movements to ease them away. Her expertise in Shiatsu massage showed in the immaculate finger pressure techniques that she used on my problematic areas. It was an hour of total heaven, I didn’t want to leave.

Revitalised and relaxed, I changed and ordered a delicious fresh juice, a tropical mix of mango, coconut water, papaya, orange and lime. A sweet and vibrant pick-me-up before returning to the mayhem of London.

The Como Shambhala spa is a small venue offering treatments that make a big difference to how you feel. I cannot wait to return to try out one of the other innovative massages.

Davina-Mulford-Millinery

Wedding season is upon us and it seems fitting to feature a young innovative hat designer.

Davina Mulford Millinery was launched in 2015, specialising in beautiful, affordable headwear for occasions such as weddings and Royal Ascot.

The daughter of a dressmaker, beautiful design and craftmanship are at the heart of Davina’s creations.

Prior to training as a milliner, Davina co-founded a hat rental company, where she gained an invaluable insight into the world of millinery.

In 2014 she decided to branch out on her own, training at The London College of Fashion and Kensington and Chelsea College, as well as working for renowned milliners Gina Foster, and Noel Stewart.

Hats and headpieces are made to order from Davina’s studio in West London, and can be made in almost any colour, to match your outfit.  You should allow 2-3 weeks for your order to be ready.

Brick Brewery, Peckham

Brick Brewery, Peckham

Brick Brewery was founded in December 2013. The dynamic team brew a range of craft beers in the heart of Peckham Rye. As a microbrewery they produce just 5 brewers barrels or 1,000L of beer per brew. The artisan beers can be found in many Southeast London outlets, including pubs, bars, restaurants, butchers and delis. This exclusive beer can also be sampled at the home of the brewery beneath the station in Peckham, where there is a welcoming outdoor seating area.

It was local Peckham Rye resident Ian Stewart who founded the brewery in 2013 taking inspiration from around the world to create a wide variety of beer styles he now brings to the London scene.

The brewery tap room in Peckham is open Friday evening from 5pm to 9pm and again on Saturday 12 noon to 9pm where you can enjoy the core range of cask, keg or bottled beers but also small run exclusives available only at the tap room. I enjoyed a lazy Saturday evening here last week with a group of friends and enjoyed the refreshing and tasty beers on offer
