I don’t know if the Mount Cinnamon team had already looked at my website or whether it was just fate, but miraculously our Mount Cinnamon suite was kitted out in bright pink from head to toe. If my blog was a bedroom, this would be it. As we walked around investigating, each room brought on a new wave of excitement. The Mount Cinnamon rooms are designed and decorated with flair and creativity for ultimate comfort and maximum fun. A few of my favourite features include the retro orange SMEG fridge, the quirky bath-shower, the exotic plants, the huge shaggy pink wool carpet and of course, the amazing bed on stilts (just like the one in The Princess and the Pea).
The Mount Cinnamon resort opened in 2005 and has received rave reviews ever since. Cleverly thought through and conveniently arranged, this ‘de Savary’ property mimics the joie de vivre so evident in Grenadian life. The facilities at Mount Cinnamon are numerous and varied, the crystal-blue pool and hotel restaurant (Savvy’s) are available for guests, as well as the more unusual beach volleyball court, croquet lawn, tennis court, and one-room spa, all reached via the picturesque garden path.
We spent a bit of time relaxing on the white sand beach (Grande Anse) but most of our days were spent exploring and enjoying our characterful suite. We were lucky enough to have Hacienda 2B with two bathrooms both supplied with BeeKind toiletries, coconut soapballs and plentiful soft towels. Through to the kitchen and we found every cooking utensil you could need along with a microwave, smart-looking cooker, and fresh fruit and banana bread in the fridge for us to eat. The bedroom, of course, was my favourite. Aside from the bed (which was among the most comfortable I’ve ever experienced), the room had pretty vintage lamps, a useful beauty desk and mirror and cute colour coordinated trinkets.
Considering the standard of the rooms, I was expecting more from Savvy’s, which seems to be recommended in most of the ‘where to dine in Grenada’ leaflets. The restaurant was almost empty when we ate here for dinner on Saturday evening. The menu is limited with three courses and only a few options for each. Using seasonal local produce the menu changes daily depending on the catch and crop available. After warm bread and wincingly strong cocktails we had the vegetable quiche and okra and calaloo (spinach-like) soup – healthy recipes but mediocre in taste. The mains were slightly better, extra-cheesy lobster thermidor was well received by my companion though my pork tenderloin was a little bland. The high prices aren’t reflected in the quality of cooking which is a real shame; perhaps they up their game during high season.
Breakfast was idyllic however with American and Continental options available eaten on the restaurant balcony with a view of Grande Anse beach and St George’s in the distance.
We found the staff at Mount Cinnamon very helpful and resourceful at all times, genuinely kind and friendly throughout our stay.
I will always remember our time at Mount Cinnamon… after a week on the island I truly cannot think of a better place to stay, we were very sad to leave.
