There are lots of characterful b&b’s to choose from when it comes to booking accommodation in Cornwall, but special hotels are harder to find. Hotel Tresanton in St Mawes set the standard when it opened on the Cornish coast in 1999. Owned and designed by the illustrious and creative Olga Polizzi the house oozes style, with charming details wherever you look.
St Mawes is an idyllic and unspoilt village filled with bobbing boats and dedicated fisherman. When you are not enjoying the luxuries of Tresanton head to nearby St Mawes Castle or drive to nearby Lost Gardens of Heligan for a magical walk. There are plenty of great restaurants nearby making use of the plentiful fresh ingredients that surround them, or eat at the hotel where the relaxed bistro serves simple but delicious comfort food.
Hotel Tresanton has 30 rooms and suites, each is different, showcasing antiques and artworks which Olga has discovered over time. Our suite overlooked the expansive sea with a lovely balcony and surrounded by exotic plants. The two bedrooms were beautiful, instantly welcoming with soft furnishings and luxurious details.
I loved the splashes of colour and contrasting patterns which added charm and personality to the suite. The living area featured a large plush sofa, high-tech TV and tea making facilities, when requested.
I am a huge mosaic fan, so was excited to discover our bathroom floor was decorated with mosaic waves. A huge bathtub was a welcome addition to our bathroom and I was also grateful for the lovely bathrobes and full range of REN toiletries.
Breakfast is served in the relaxed restaurant… a tempting array of pastries, cereals and fruits are laid out each morning for guests or you may wish to choose from the more filling a la carte menu. I enjoyed a continental spread of food with my strong coffee and freshly squeezed juice.
For a real treat book a trip out on Tresanton’s beautiful restored 1930’s sail boat, Pinuccia. From May until the end of September the experienced hotel skipper can take you sailing round Falmouth Bay, so you can appreciate the beauty of the area from the sea.
