There are several Lion Sands properties in the Kruger National Park, each giving a different kind of safari experience. Ivory Lodge is the jewel in the crown offering the ultimate luxury, while Narina offers comfortable chic accommodation and Tinga is a contemporary colonial homestead. All the Lion Sands lodges concentrate on giving their guests the best time, whether you are out on a drive, relaxing in your room, or dining under the stars.
We felt very at home at Tinga Lodge even though we spent less than 24 hours at the property. This Lion Sands lodge is just a 5 minute drive from Skukuza airport (a 45 minute flight from Johannesburg), making it very accessible and easy to get to.
The grand wooden main building suits the natural environment, looking out to a lovely view of the park, where animals often graze. We were greeted with refreshing pink lemonade and shown to our villa.
There are 9 suites at Tinga lodge, and a few months ago they also unveiled the brand new two-bedroom Tinga Hi’Nkweni family villa taking the total lodge capacity to 22 guests. The suites are very private and isolated, surrounded by overgrown plants and friendly wildlife.
Inside, the colonial style is simple and stylish, a luxuriously big bed and a generous living area, all decorated in subtle shades of cream and brown. The bathroom includes a huge bath (perfect for a long soak after an early morning drive) and dual sinks.
Our field guide Riann was ready to go bright and early each morning and afternoon, eager to show us the best animals. When we asked to see a rare leopard we didn’t expect to discover a mother and cub just an hour later lying beautifully on a tree branch! It took my breath away and even Riann seemed stunned by the sighting. Halfway through the drives we would stop somewhere picturesque for a drink and snack, a rare opportunity to stop and appreciate the landscape.
There is a wonderful sense of space at Tinga, even when every room is full. Guests come together at mealtimes for a hearty South African dinner, or a delicious a la carte breakfast, but most of the time you don’t see many people as you wander round the idyllic property.
