A Weekend Away in Cartmel, The Lake District

Despite studying for three years at Manchester University, I never managed to make the trip to the nearby national park, The Lake District. It is a lengthy five hour drive to Cumbria from London, but the beautiful views, epic walking routes and calming atmosphere of this region make it well worth the travelling time and effort.

There are many beautiful towns in and around the Lake District, we particularly liked Grasmere and Ambleside, but keen foodies should head first to Cartmel.

Cartmel is a quaint and charming village to explore… wander round the 12th century Priory Church, enjoy a day at the races, and indulge in a big slice of sticky toffee pudding as Cartmel is the home to this sweet comforting dessert.

Simon Rogan’s award-winning restaurant, L’Enclume has made Cartmel a culinary destination. Recently named best restaurant in the UK for the fourth consecutive year, this gastronomic eatery is better than ever. There is the choice of a seven or twenty course set menu, which both showcase the finest local ingredients. Amazingly L’Enclume are able to take all dietary requirements into consideration. It is the perfect fine dining choice for vegetarians and vegans as the majority of dishes focus on elevating the wonderful fruit and vegetables from the area.

Howbarrow Farm offers a modest and comfortable self-catered accommodation option within the Cartmel countryside and close by to the main Lake District sites and villages. We enjoyed a nights stay in the cosy loft lodgings. Along with the king-sized bedroom there is a spacious living area, dressing room and a kitchen to cook in. The farmhouse itself is over 500 years old, and the organic farm supplies ingredients for the L’Enclume kitchen. The surroundings are idyllic, with rolling green hills and cattle grazing all around you, it feel blissfully secluded. The family also own a local bakery… the tasty croissants were the perfect breakfast in bed.
